Adventure Starts with Weather: KBOI 2 launches new weather vehicle!

KBOI 2 News unveiled our new weather truck today. The vehicle will allow our weather team to be out in the field measuring precipitation with realtime observations with state-of-the-art equipment.

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) When it pulls up, you certainly can't miss the new KBOI 2 weather vehicle.

And really, that's part of the fun of it.

"I'm overwhelmed, because not only is it the coolest-looking weather rig in the country, but it has tremendous function," said KBOI 2 Chief Meteorologist Roland Steadham.

But beyond the quintessentially-Idaho, custom logos showing Roland Steadham's passion for skydiving and rafting, is a serious weather vehicle that our Chief Meteorologist will use when weather is happening in the Gem State.

"It's going to give us real-time observations of what's happening on the location, on-site that we're at - and we're going to be doing some storm chasing," he said.

And we can't thank our partners enough.

The folks at Peterson Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac have pulled out all the stops with their brand-new, 2017 Chevrolet Suburban.

"Well, we've put a six-inch lift on the Suburban, you know it sits high, just normal when it comes out of the factory - but putting that lift on it will just give it a lot more clearance and you'll be able to take it places where you normally wouldn't," said Brady Peterson, General Manager of Peterson Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac.

... and that includes the new 20-inch wheels, with 35-inch tires!

Idaho's STEM Action Center is also a proud partner with this rolling classroom for kids to learn about weather - with capabilities to launch the station's new drone.

"So we're going to be able to go places, launch the drone, and use the live shot - the live signal from the drone - and that's going to be featured, I'd say, by the middle of January," Roland said.

As you can imagine, Roland's been eager to get "Weather 2" rolling, but building this scientific weather machine takes time, right down to the graphics.

"Well, the hardest thing is - it's a three dimensional surface with a two dimensional sticker, and so it really is the materials, which have improved over the last 10 years, and the skill of the installer, which we have the best," said Robert Rule, co-owner of Image 360.

So keep an eye out for the new KBOI 2 weather vehicle.

If it's on the road, you can be sure a member of our weather team is in there, ready to bring you your forecast, that combines the serious with a sense of fun.

... Exactly what we know Idaho is all about.

"We have a philosophy at Channel 2 that every adventure begins with the weather - and so many of us here in the state of Idaho - we love what this state has to offer - and this is going to be the launching pad for a lot of the adventures we're going to be doing," Roland said.
