Former Boise State running back Jack Fields Jr., 25, was shot and killed late Thursday in a Georgia hotel lobby by police, local media there report.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office was called out to the Residence Inn in Augusta. It was there, officials say, when deputies tried to put Fields into handcuffs when he allegedly resisted arrest and stabbed a deputy multiple times with a knife he had in coat pocket.

The deputy, who was stabbed multiple times, shot Fields, who died at the scene. The deputy was taken to a local hospital where he's being treated for his injuries.

Fields played high school football at Americas High School in El Paso, Tx. The school provided the following statement:

The Socorro Independent School District and Americas High School is deeply saddened by the news about Jack Fields, a 2012 graduate of Americas High School. Jack was a respected and talented student-athlete and leader while at Americas High School. We do not know the details of the tragic incident that occurred in Georgia last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fields family, as well as the officer involved.
