Opening day nearing for Hawks

The Boise Hawks will begin the season in Eugene, Ore. on Friday, June 17. Their first home game is Monday, June 20.

The ever-changing minor league baseball roster means Boise Hawks manager Andy Gonzales has a lot of players to get to know.

"Well I am not good with names so I do forget a lot of names but I am working on that," he said.

The Hawks hosted media day on Wednesday, along with a photo session.

For some players it's their first time in Boise.

"Driving in and seeing the mountains and sunsets, it's been pretty incredible," said pitcher Will Haynie.

Seven players who spent at least a portion of last season in Boise return to the Hawks.

"Honestly it's a great place to start if you want to start somewhere," pitcher Hayden Jones said. "Boise is a great town with great weather. It's just a great all-around place."

Whether a rookie or a veteran, players in single-A baseball know they could be moving up, or down, at any time.

"It's a blast," Haynie said. "Being able to do what you love every day and to get paid to do it just puts the icing on the cake. I'm just trying to enjoy it and soak up all the knowledge that I can."

They first have to get to opening day though, which is Friday in Eugene, Ore. against the Emeralds.

"I am excited right now," Gonzalez said. "I can't wait for the season to start."

The Hawks first home game is Monday, June 20 against Salem-Keizer. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
