Two men were fatally stabbed during a fight outside the Dogwood Bar & Grill in Midtown overnight.

Clayton Beathard, 22, and Paul Trapeni III, 21, were both identified as the victims killed in the incident on Saturday, Metro police confirmed in a news release. A third stabbing victim, a 21-year-old man, remains hospitalized.

The stabbings appear to have stemmed from an argument over a woman that began inside the bar. The incident turned physical when the parties went outside after the bar closed.

Beathard, a former Tennessee Mr. Football Award winner, is the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard and country music singer Tucker Beathard, as well as the son of country music songwriter Casey Beathard and grandson of former NFL executive Bobby Beathard, who is a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

Clayton and Trapeni graduated from Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, in 2016. The school released a statement regarding their deaths and said counselors would be available this afternoon to students.

Roc Batten, Head Football Coach at Ensworth, and former coach to Beathard and Trapeni at BGA had this this to say:

It was such an honor to coach a kid like Clay. Of course he had many accolades on the field, but beyond that he was a great person who had such a big heart. I’ll remember him for his confidence and poise under pressure, his big smile, and his leadership. He had a presence about him and people wanted to be around him. One of my favorite pictures of Clay was a picture taken of him with my son after a big win at Page HS in an over time win where Clay took a risk to help us win. My son looked up to him and he was just the kind of young man I wanted my son to be around and aspire to be. I love his entire family and I am grieving with them over his untimely passing. Paul was a tough player who played and outworked people on the field. Off the field he was a great person that was fun to be around. He had such a humorous personality and made others smile and laugh. He was a good friend to others and a great teammate. I was fortunate to coach a young man who was so passionate about football and a good friend to many.

Multiple people were involved in the outdoor fight during which the two victims were both fatally stabbed in their sides. Beathard, of Thompsons Station, and Trapeni, of Franklin, were both transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where they were both pronounced dead.

Metro Police are asking for the public's assistance identifying the man featured in a surveillance photo, who is being sought for questioning.

Anyone who recognizes him from the attached photo is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
