Watch: George H. W. Bush rescued after being shot down by Japanese in WWII

Before becoming president, George H. W. Bush served in World War II with the U.S. Navy, as pilot in bombing missions against the Japanese.

It was during an attack against Chichi Jima that Bush’s aircraft was hit with anti-aircraft fire. Bush’s two crew members were killed in the attack.

Bush parachuted down into the ocean, where he waited on an inflatable raft to be rescued, four hours later by a lifeguard submarine.
