BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Two people have died following a shooting at the Boise Towne Square Mall.
Five additional people, including an officer, and the suspect were injured. It's believed to be that there was only one shooter, who's now in custody at a local hospital and is in critical condition.
The injured officer has been treated and released.
"I cannot stress enough how traumatic this event is for the community at large as well as those who are witnesses or the families involved...," Boise PD chief Ryan Lee said during Monday's media briefing. "We ask the community at large keep the families of the deceased in their thoughts and they also respect their privacy."
Earlier Monday, officers went through the mall to clear each business.
CBS2 reporter Trevor Fay saw several people being loaded into ambulances as others cried and spoke on their cell phones.
"Those injured in today’s unthinkable shooting at the Boise Towne Square Mall are in my prayers," Idaho Gov. Brad Little said. "The State of Idaho stands prepared to assist the Boise Police Department as they investigate the shooting."
Chief Lee says officers were called to the mall Monday afternoon after reports of shots fired and that at least one person was down. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a person who matched the description of the suspect and there was "an exchange of gun fire," which resulted in an officer being injured.
"Never should one have to or does one expect when they're saying goodbye to their loved one who's headed to work...that they'll get a call like they did today," said Lauren McLean, Boise mayor. "Countless people found themselves in a situation they never would have nor should have expected."
The mayor thanked the mall shopkeepers who reacted so quickly.
"You showed in a tough and chaotic moment how much you care and what you're willing to do to support and care for strangers."
Macy's issued the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic event that took place at Boise Towne Square. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We are working closely with the local law enforcement in their ongoing investigation and defer all questions to them."
Local police departments have also issued statements praising the first responders and offering condolences.
Police and hospital officials were working to notify family members of those injured and killed in the shooting, Chief Lee said. Milwaukee Road has been reopened after it was closed for several hours while crews investigated the incident.
A motive is not yet known.
"My heartfelt thoughts & prayers go out to everyone impacted by today’s senseless violence," said U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo. "I join all of Idaho in expressing our appreciation for law enforcement officers & first responders who bravely & rapidly responded to the situation unfolding at the Boise Towne Square Mall."
Sen. Jim Risch also put out a statement on the shooting late Monday.
"All of Boise and all of Idaho grieves for those lost and those injured in today's shooting at the Boise Towne Square Mall. This is an unimaginable tragedy. Vicki and I are praying for those impacted by today's events, as well as their families and loved ones. As the Boise Police Department continues to investigate this heinous crime, I want to sincerely thank our law enforcement officers and first responders for all you do to keep Idaho safe. May God bless you."
The mall will remain closed while the investigation continues.
