BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Crews worked with two cranes to bring down an earthquake-damaged cross on top of Boise’s Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist Wednesday afternoon.
Deacon Daniel Gamboa told CBS2 the cross weighs one thousand pounds and is made of sandstone.
The cross was cracked at its base by Tuesday's quake.
The job was to get the cross down safely before it might fall down.
The Ada County Highway District closed Hays Street between between 9th and 8th Streets during the successful operation to remove the damaged cross.
It's unclear when the cross will be repaired and replaced. We'll keep you posted.
St. John's was built in the early 1920s and has long been a center of focus for the valley's Catholic community.
The Boise cathedral was placed on the National Historic Register in 1977.
