Boise City Council members approved the design contract for the city's new Main Library branch Tuesday night, pushing the concept one step closer to becoming a reality.

The $11,185,236 contract with Safdie Architects will allow the architectural firm to take the project from the design phase toward completion.

Included in the new branch will be library space and an area for the city's arts and history department. The original design also included space for an events center, which is now anticipated as a further phase of the project. Our media partners at the Idaho Press report that portion of the project is being delayed to help bring the project under budget.

City leaders have set the project's budget at just over $85 million, although the projected budget originally totaled more than $103 million (this number included funds for the event center).

Construction on the new Main Library branch is expected to start in the spring of 2020, and wrap up in 2022, according to plans laid out by the city and the architect.
