Jacob Phillips of Kamiah was still in the Intensive Care Unit at Providence Sacred Heart in Spokane Wednesday night after plunging 75 feet down a ravine off State Highway 162 last Friday.

His mother told KLEW News, Jacobs swerved to avoid a deer while on his way home from work in Grangeville.

His car went off the road and down a ravine on near milepost 13.

On September 15, 2017 at 8:15 p.m., his family reported him missing to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office. He left work in Grangeville around 2:15 p.m.

According to Jacob’s mother Lee Ann Phillips-Eaton, he suffered two breaks to the left femur, and a broken bone in his foot.

He was unable to leave the car and could only yell at passing cars.

He was stuck for 38 hours.

Idaho County Dispatch requested information from Inland Cellular, Phillips' cell carrier and Idaho County deputies began searching various roadways and checking the residence.

On Saturday Inland Cellular advised that Phillips' phone was pinging off the Kamiah tower but couldn't provide any additional information. Deputies and family continued looking for Phillips.

Early Sunday morning, Inland Cellular advised the signal was low and the phone should be within 5 miles of the tower possibly to the southwest.

Deputies began focusing their search on this area and at 5:30 am, Deputy Sam AuGello heard his cries for help and located Phillips and his vehicle approximately 150 feet from the roadway in the deep ravine.

His mother said Jacob lost a lot of blood and has already received two units so far.

They believe the airbags damaged his airway and lungs when they activated.

Jacob now has air in his chest cavity and fluid buildup in his lungs.

He’s currently on a machine that forces air into his lungs because his oxygen levels won’t stay up. He is unable to speak and is very weak. He may have to be sedated and placed on a ventilator, his mother said.

Jacob’s aunt has set up an account under Jacob’s Medical at Freedom Northwest Credit Union in Kamiah.
