A young South Dakota woman’s wish has been granted in the Gem State.

Shelby Huff, 20, was greeted at the Boise Airport by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho on Wednesday.

Huff’s wish? To attend the annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival in Ketchum.

“My wish was to go to the Trailing of the Sheep. To see the sheep come down from the mountain would be super cool. And to enjoy the festival activities,” Huff said. “Truthfully they’re just so cute, and I really like sheep. That’s my main reasoning.”

Make-A-Wish Idaho came out in full as Huff was welcomed by a cheering crowd and a performance by local Basque dancers.

“She is going to get the full Idaho experience,” Brenda Vogt, director of Program Services at Make-A-Wish said. “We have arranged a fly-fishing excursion, and a horseback trail ride for her in addition to a full day at the Trailing of the Sheep Festival on Saturday. So she will just basically be the VIP guest at all of the events.”

Huff suffers from Aplastic Anemia – a blood cell disorder. Because of her sickness, she had to wait a year since she first put in her request to see sheep in the Wood River Valley. Her visit is already off to an exciting start.

“My heart started palpitating and I was like ‘oh my gosh’ I didn’t know it was going to be this big," Huff said. "I thought it was just going to be one wish person (at the airport) so this whole celebration - like the dancers - it’s just been a great welcome.”

This is Huff’s first time in Idaho. She is traveling with her family and will stay one night in Boise and then head up to Ketchum for the festivities.

She chose a good year to go to the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. The yearly event is celebrating its 20th anniversary Oct. 5 through Oct. 9.
