Transportation officials say the overpass is too dangerous to drive on top of and it's closed indefinitely.

But the interstate below, remains open.

KBOI 2 asked officials, “How safe it is to drive underneath it?”

Idaho Department of Transportation says there is significant damage to the bridge. But, specifically to one section.

So here is what you need to know before driving under the Cloverdale bridge.

Jake Melder with ITD says the damage effects the entire bridge width. Which is one of the reasons why they can't have traffic on top the bridge.

"We don't want to risk the safety of the traveling public by putting any additional weight on those girders because they may be weakened from the fire,” Melder said.

The deck of the bridge is supported by concrete girders, where ITD says has the bulk of the damage.

"We did not see anything that would, evidence any pieces of the concrete falling off, onto the roadway underneath. And that's why we've determined it safe underneath the bridge," Melder said.

The closure will remain in effect until repairs are made, which Melder says could take several months.

"We understand a several month closure like this is an impact to the traveling public and so we appreciate the public's patience and the understanding for their safety as to why we have to get this closure done," Melder said.

Right now, ITD is in the process of securing the funding and designing the plans so they can get to work on the repairs.
