The first of many steps to widen Interstate-84 through Nampa begins next week.

The Idaho Transportation Department says its shoulder widening project between the Karcher and Franklin Boulevard interchanges will begin on Wednesday. The new shoulders will be used to keep two lanes of traffic flowing in each direction along the interstate when it's widened to three lanes beginning next spring.

All traffic lanes will remain open between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. as crews will work primarily at night to avoid impeding drivers during the daytime, when traffic volumes are heaviest. Speeds will be reduced to 55 mph during the day and night. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction during construction times.
