An adapted custom home is being built in Kuna for a paraplegic Iraq veteran.

Army Specialist Andrew Pike was shot in the abdomen while on patrol in Bayji, Iraq in 2007. An army surgeon, Captain Yamamoto, was able to stabilize him and save his life, but his injuries resulted in complete paraplegia of his lower extremities.

Homes For Our Troops is now building a special home for SPC Pike which includes more than 40 major special adaptations. That includes special adaptations like widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered countertops.

“The new home will enable me to watch my family grow and move on in life, without the worry of wondering if I can get around or provide for my family,” SPC Pike said.

The home will also curb the safety issues that usually come with a traditional home, including navigating a wheelchair through narrow hallways or over thresholds, riding on carpets, or reaching for cabinets that are too high.

Homes For Our Troops will donate the home to SPC Pike, thanks to contributions from donors, supporters, and corporate partners.

"Now medically retired, Andrew leads an active life in spite of his injuries," the nonprofit said. "He enjoys hunting and fishing. He has also taken up archery and is training to compete in the Paralympics. He is a beekeeper and maintains several hives."

Homes For Our Troops has over 65 active projects underway nationwide. To find out more on how to get involved or make a donation visit the organization's website.
