Opinion: Speaker Pelosi - where is your compromise?
In a televised address from the White House this past weekend, President Trump offered a sensible compromise to Democrats as the government shutdown drags on.
The president proposed a three-year extension of status for approximately 700,000 DACA recipients as well as extended protection for those under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, which applies to about 300,000 individuals.
As a key part of the compromise, the president reiterated his request for $5.7 billion for the barrier on our southern border, along with other enhancements to border security.
Everything the president offered in his address, Democrats in Congress have asked for since he was elected. However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), sadly, rejected the proposal ahead of the announcement.
President Trump took a political gamble by offering this compromise – softening his stance in a practical way in order to protect the livelihoods of those affected by the government shutdown.
Speaker Pelosi is putting the cart way before the horse – claiming that she would come to the negotiating table, but only on her own terms.
The president has publicly offered multiple compromises in order to put an end to this government shutdown.
Speaker Pelosi – where is your compromise? What exempts you from putting the American people above politics?
Here’s the bottom line: Speaker Pelosi’s stance in regard to these negotiations illustrates the vacuum of leadership that plagues the Democratic Party. Pelosi’s unwillingness, or inability, to compromise is negatively impacting YOUR bottom line if you work for the federal government.
