Hawks beat Salem-Keizer, take 1-0 series lead

Boise pitchers Paul Blackburn and Zach Godley combined for a three-hit shutout of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, as the Hawks won 3-0 to take a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three South Division playoff series.

The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead four pitches into the game. Kevin Encarnacion hit Chase Johnson's first pitch of the game into right for a single, with Danny Lockhart hitting a 1-0 pitch into the right field corner for a double - with Encarnacion scoring and Lockhart moving to third on a bobble by Brian Ragira. Yasiel Balaguert lined the next pitch to right for a sacrifice fly to extend the lead.

Blackburn went seven innings, allowing just two singles, and tied a career-high with eight strikeouts. After allowing back-to-back singles to start the second inning, Blackburn retired the next 16 straight batters he faced.

Boise got an insurance run in the seventh, as Balaguert singled home Encarnacion from third. Zach Godley came in from the bullpen and worked around a walk and single in his two innings of work, fanning three, for his first professional save.

Game 2 is tomorrow night in Keizer, Ore., with Duane Underwood meeting Chris Johnson at 7:35 p.m. - live on 1350 KTIK-AM.
