Hawks avoid home-opening sweep

BOISE, Idaho - Yasiel Balaguert and Jose Dore each had two RBI, with James Pugliese and two relievers combining on a three-hitter, as the Boise Hawks stopped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 5-1, before 2,384 fans at Memorial Stadium.

Balaguert broke a scoreless tie in the fourth, roping a two-run single with the bases loaded, to get the Hawks on the board. Dore followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.

Pugliese went five strong innings, working around three Jeremy Sy hits, striking out four, to earn his second win of the season. Sy provided S-K's lone run of the game, hitting an inside-the-park homer past a diving Shawon Dunston Jr. in the fifth.

Boise added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings - as Dore lined a two-out RBI double to make it 4-1, and Lance Rymel scored on a wild pitch.

The Hawks bullpen tossed four no-hit innings, as Corbin Hoffner and Mike Hamann combined for five strikeouts.

Boise hits the road for a five-game series in Spokane starting tomorrow, with Paul Blackburn meeting lefty Yohander Mendez at 7:35 p.m. (MDT)
