State football championships set for Friday

Middleton, Fruitland and Salmon River (Riggins, ID) are the only District III teams still standing in the 2012 Idaho High School State football tournament.

Middleton clinched its second straight trip to the 4A state title game Friday night with a 32-30 defeat of Bonneville.

The Vikings had to wait until Saturday night to learn if their opponent would be a regular-season rematch with Skyview (win, 35-15) or a 2011 championship game rematch with Blackfoot (loss, 42-24).

Skyview kept it close with the defending champions, but fell to Blackfoot 34-27 late Saturday in Pocatello's Holt Arena.

In 3A, Fruitland won for a second time in the playoffs on the road up north, defeating Timberlake 33-0.

The Grizzlies return to the 3A state title game for the seventh straight year and will face Shelley. Fruitland is 2-4 in the previous six title games, with two losses to Shelley.

Declo beat Marsing Saturday night to reach the 2A state title game against Firth. Marsing turned the ball over early, leading to a quick Declo touchdown, and the Huskies struggled to tackle in the 36-0 loss.

Salmon River High School from Riggins upended Deitrich 35-12 in one 1ADII semifinal, while Lighthouse Christian was too much for Garden Valley, 58-14 in the other.
