Junior Steelheads hosting Thorne Cup Finals in McCall

McCALL, Idaho (KBOI) - The Idaho Junior Steelheads skating for a third-straight Thorne Cup. Impressive enough, but even more so when you consider the team's only been around for four seasons.

The Junior Steelies make their home in McCall, and play host to the best of the Western States Hockey League this week for the six-team Thorne Cup Finals. Idaho won a close bidding war with Dallas to host things this year, just five years after proving the smallest city in the WSHL could pull it off.

"This will be like the Worlds Masters Games. You know, we're talking 150-200 athletes, 400 or 500 parents. We'll get people up from Boise, it'll be the last week of skiing, you know Brundage, the hockey, let's do this thing. And in the town I really got a positive response," said Manchester Ice & Event Centre General Manager John Barth.

"I've been doing this a long time, and every merchant's business that I've walked into in this town, knows what the Thorne Cup is, they've been here to watch some of it, and they're just so happy we're here. Which, almost anywhere else we would go, they wouldn't know we were here, and wouldn't care that we were there," added WSHL Commissioner Ron White.
