Boise State's Martarano selected in MLB Draft

While at Fruitland High School, Joey Martarano was wanted by both Major League Baseball teams and college football teams.

He chose football, signing to play at Boise State.

Last year, the Philadelphia Phillies came calling, drafting in the 13th round. Martarano turned down a big pay day to stay in Boise and with the Broncos.

This year, the Chicago Cubs are giving it a shot.

The Cubs selected the linebacker in the 22nd round of this year's MLB Draft. He can sign a contract with the team or stay with the Broncos.

Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin released this written statement:

"This is a unique situation, but Joey Martarano is a special athlete. We're proud to have him as a member of the Boise State football team, and we want to see him achieve his dreams. If that includes baseball, Joey knows we are here to support him."
