Suspect in monkey death scheduled for Boise court appearance Wednesday

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - A 22-year-old Weiser man suspected of killing a monkey at the Boise zoo is scheduled to be moved from Washington County to the Ada County Jail sometime Tuesday.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office said Michael J. Watkins has been moved from jail in Weiser where he'd been held since Monday afternoon following his arrest in connection with the early Saturday morning break-in and death of a monkey at Zoo Boise.

He was booked into the Ada County Jail Tuesday afternoon.

Watkins faces an arraignment hearing Wednesday in 4th District Court in Boise.

The patas monkey died early Saturday of blunt force trauma.

Authorities say they'll charge Watkins with a pair of felonies: burglary, for allegedly breaking into Zoo Boise, and grand theft, for allegedly taking and killing the monkey.

Police don't plan to charge a second man who was with Watkins, but apparently never entered the zoo.

A citizen's tip led to Watkins' arrest.
