Suspect in Meridian standoff with police shoots himself

MERIDIAN, Idaho (KBOI) - A police standoff with a suspect that lasted several hours is now over after the suspect committed suicide, Meridian Police say.

Officers spent several hours with the man after they say he pointed a shotgun at officers.

The incident began just before noon when officials say officers tried to serve a search warrant. The standoff ended just before 3:45 p.m.

"We thought we were making progress," said Deputy Chief Tracy Basterreachea. "For what ever reason the suspect decided to take his own life."

Meridian School District had Chief Joseph Elementary in lockdown mode throughout the ordeal to make sure no children left the building.
