Students lace up their walking shoes

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- It's National Walk to School Day and schools from all over the Treasure Valley are encouraging students to walk instead of getting a ride from mom or dad.

At Horizon Elementary, Walk to School Day is in conjunction with the mayor's 150 challenge to walk 150 miles this year for Idaho's 150th birthday.

The Idaho Transportation Department and the Federal Highway Administration will be out walking with students from the Boise school district, making sure they're safe.

In Meridian, the mayor, fire, and police officers will also be out at schools such as Ponderosa Elementary and Discovery, making sure kids stay safe and enjoy the exercise.

Drivers are warned to take extra precaution on their morning commute and look out for the extra students walking.
