Sheriff: 11-year-old crashes pickup, Ore. dad drives away drunk

COOS BAY, Ore. -- A man teaching his 11-year-old daughter to drive on Saturday ended the lesson in jail, after police say he drove away drunk when she crashed the pickup.

Deputies were called to the scene of a reported hit-and-run crash about 6 p.m. at the Plainview RV Park on Cape Arago Highway.

Officials said crash occurred while Ronald Lee Walter, 43, of Coos Bay, was allowing his 11-year-old daughter to drive his pickup in the RV park.

The Sheriff's office said Walter was attempting to teach her how to drive.

Witnesses reported that the girl lost control of the vehicle and stuck a parked vehicle.

Walter then sent his daughter back her home in the RV Park before driving away from the scene without attempting to contact the owner, according to the sheriff's office

Walter was quickly located at another residence, along with his damaged pickup.

Walter was driving with a suspended license and tests showed his blood-alcohol level at .14 percent, police said.

He was charged with DUII and misdemeanor driving while suspended, and the case is being referred to the District Attorney for charges of Reckless Endangering and Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver.

Authorities say no injuries were reported.
