Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl sends family letter through Red Cross

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - KBOI has learned Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's family has received a letter from the captured Idaho soldier.

A friend close to the family says they believe it was written by him because they say it's his handwriting in the letter. They say they are ecstatic and believe he's still alive.

"We have received a letter from Bowe through the Red Cross," his father told the family friend. "He was scripted and redacted but he was no doubt alive and his faculties fully functioning as of two months ago. They are being very careful with him. He is still highly valued at high levels."

The last update of any kind the family received was video released by the Taliban in May of 2011.

Bowe was captured in 2009.
