Rabid bat bites teen in eastern Idaho

BONNEVILE COUNTY, Idaho (KBOI) -- A bat that recently bit a teenager has tested positive for rabies, Idaho health officials say.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare says the bat was found in Bonneville County. The teen received medical care and is expected to be OK.

About 16 rabid bats are found in Idaho every year.

"Rabies is a fatal viral illness without proper medical management. People should call their health care providers promptly if they have been bitten or scratched by a bat," says Dr. Leslie Tengelsen, deputy state epidemiologist.
