Police: Teen flips pickup, hits power pole while texting and driving
BOISE, Idaho -- An Emmett teen flipped his pickup and knocked over a telephone pole while texting and driving on Vanderdasson Rd. Saturday night , state police said.
Emergency crews treated Wesley Russell, 17 of Emmett, for minor injuries at the scene.
At around 9:50 p.m., Russell told police that he lost control in a corner while driving his Ford F150 pickup west on Vanderdasson Road.
Crash investigators said that Russell was going about 50 miles per hour when he went off the roadway and hit a telephone pole. Wires suspending the phone pole got caught on the truck and flipped it onto its top in a stand of nearby trees, police said.
Officers said that Russell was texting while he was driving at the time of the crash. Police cited Russell for reckless driving.
State police closed down the roadway for several hours while Idaho Power worked to replace the power pole.
