One dead after shooting at St. Alphonsus in Ontario, police say

ONTARIO, Ore., (KBOI) -- One person has been shot dead following an early morning shooting in Ontario.

Police tell KBOI 2News the shooting occurred at about 3:30 a.m. in the hospital's west parking lot.

The man who died, identified by police as 42-year-old Dale Joseph Write of Ontario, apparently got into an altercation with Juan Carlos Lopez, who shot Write with a gun, officials say. Lopez, police say, fled the scene in a vehicle and drove over Write in the process.

It's unclear whether Write died of the gunshot wound or being trampled by the vehicle but he was dead when police arrived on scene.

Max Mills was startled early in the morning to the sound of about three or four gun shots across the street.

"Yea, they were loud," Mills said. "I knew they were gun shots, I knew they weren't fire crackers."

A female with the two men, ran into the hospital and called 911. Officials say Lopez drove to a home in Nyssa where he was later arrested. He's been charged with murder and is in the Malheur County Jail.
