New Year's Idaho Potato Drop site set for 8th and Main
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- With the massive City Center Plaza construction project literally uprooting the Grove downtown, the second annual Idaho Potato Drop this New Year's Eve will take place in the intersection of 8th and Main Streets.
Last New Year's Eve, tens of thousands of people gathered for the inaugural drop right where the big dig is now taking place on the Grove in front of the U.S. Bank Building.
So this time, organizers are scooting the titanic tater (actually 17 feet long) over just a bit.
For this New Year's celebration, the steel and foam spud will drop from a Gardner Company crane smack in the middle of the intersection of 8th and Main.
And organizers say drop number two will be twice as big as drop number one.
"We've got some surprises that we want to keep under wraps for a bit," said Dylan Cline, CEO of the Idaho New Year's Commission. "But right now, I can tell you we've got three stages, we've got national talent, national recording artists, and a huge fireworks show not just from the drop site but all three stages at the same time."
And for the first time, commemorative Idaho Potato Drop t-shirts and hoodies can be purchased online at idahopotatodrop.com.
The Idaho Potato Drop is sponsored in part by The Idaho Potato Commission and the Gardner Company.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Boise Hive, the Allumbaugh House and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
