Nampa man gets nine months in jail for stealing rocks

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- A 46-year-old Nampa man will spend nine months behind bars after he stole nearly 10,000 pounds of rocks from federal land.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Brian Kirkpatrick was sentenced Monday after he stole 9,800 pounds of sandstone from BLM land begnning in November 2012 to sell commercially for use in various landscaping projects. The rock was worth $1,472, which made the theft a felony.

When he is released, he'll have to serve three years of supervised probation.

"Public lands are just that: They are there for the public to enjoy," said Wendy Olson, US Attorney. "This prosecution hopefully sends a strong message that my office will prosecute those who illegally exploit public lands for their own gain."
