Nampa city leaders approve new bar near church

NAMPA, Idaho (KBOI) - City council gave PreFunk Beer Bar the green light to set up shop in downtown Nampa. A nearby church held up the approval process for its location on 1st Street South.

State law prohibits bars within 300 feet of churches, but Nampa City Council could approve an exception, which it did by a 6-0 vote Monday night.

Chris Strawn, president of the Downtown Business Association, said they were fortunate not to have any opposition.

"Not even from the church that's occupying the building currently," Strawn said. "They were for the approval process and allowing another business to be in downtown Nampa."

Strawn said the Tabernacle of Faith moved into an office building last year and the space was used as a bar itself in the 1970s and '80s. It is just around the corner from PreFunk.

As the economy improves, he says the addition of PreFunk to the city's nightlife is another sign of growth in downtown Nampa. The business currently serves craft beer on Front Street in Boise. The owners plan to open the Nampa location within the next month.
