Mother of toddler burned in barrel charged with murder

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - The mother of a 2-year-old girl whose body was burned in a barrel outside their Homedale home has now been charged with murder.

Police say Veronica Herrera told investigators in August that the toddler had died after a fall while potty training.

Following the discovery of the baby's burned body, prosecutors charged Herrera with destruction of evidence and failure to notify authorities about a death.

On Friday, a grand jury in Owyhee County indicted Herrera on a charge of first degree murder, as well as four counts of felony injury to a child.

Her trial is set to begin on January 29, 2013.

First degree murder is a capital offense. However, the Owyhee County Prosecutor's Office says they do not plan to seek the death penalty.

More details about the indictment are expected to be released from the prosecutor's office. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
