MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - A mother is in a burn unit at Harborview Medical Center and her two children are presumed dead after flames ripped through her Mount Vernon home early Saturday morning.

Neighbors say her two children, a 7-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, weren't able to escape the flames.

Records show two people have been arrested for investigation of murder and arson in Skagit County, but it's unclear whether those arrests are related to this fire.

Authorities have not confirmed the children's deaths, though families in the Bay View neighborhood say they saw authorities recover the bodies of the young kids.

Witnesses say the kids' mother fell two stories while trying to push out a window.

She fell to the ground and ran to Carol and Bob Eaton's home next door yelling for help. The Eatons and other neighbors say their hearts are heavy with grief.

"She was head-to-toe, [covered] in black soot," Bob Eaton said. "She was cut up really quite badly and burned. She was really in tough shape."

Two men in the home also managed to escape. All three adults were taken to the hospital.

Officials say the mother is in satisfactory condition. It's not clear if the two men were hurt.

When crews arrived on scene Saturday, the house, in the 13000 block of Bay View Road, was completely engulfed in flames. It took firefighters 11 hours to completely put out the blaze.

Neighbors say the kids that were killed attended school just a few miles down the road at Bay View Elementary School.

At the church the family typically attends, the congregation offered prayers and reached out the members for support for the family.

Crews from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene of the fire Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say they are searching for clues that the fire may have been deliberately set. There has been no officials word on what caused the fire, as of Sunday night.
