Inmate dies after suspected drug overdose at Ada County Jail

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- A federal inmate being housed at the Ada County Jail died early Tuesday morning after an apparent drug overdose.

The sheriff's office says it received an anonymous note Monday evening about the inmate, Danny Ryan of Twin Falls, as having illegal drugs. Shortly after, a K9 was brought into the cell to search for drugs, but nothing was found. Several hours later, a deputy noticed the 29-year-old old was sweating heavily, shaking and tweaking out.

Officials say Ryan refused to cooperate with medical staff. At about 2:30 a.m., however, he was running a dangerously high temperature and officials called 911. After being taken to St. Alphonsus, he lost consciousness and went into cardiac arrest and died at 4:05 a.m.

The coroner did not list a cause of death, pending toxicology reports.

Officials say Ryan tested positive for marijuana and amphetamines. He had been in custody in the jail since March 7 and was a federal inmate on a US Marshals' hold.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office is working with the US Marshals Service to gather additional information about the man and his history as they try to determine exactly what happened in the days and hours leading up to his death.

Additional details will be released soon.
