Idaho State University "I" to be removed from hill

POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) - Idaho State University officials are removing a giant letter "I'' from a Pocatello hill because it's considered too dangerous to hikers and other people passing by.

The Idaho State Journal reports work to remove the logo is expected to start around May 19.

ISU spokeswoman Adrienne King says trails in the area will be closed while the work is underway. The "I'' had become cracked and unstable and ISU officials were concerned that erosion on the hillside could worsen the problems.

The school looked at fixing the concrete structure and building a berm, but engineers determined the berm couldn't withstand the debris if the "I'' structure failed.

King says a committee of students, alumni, faculty and community members are working on ideas to replace the symbol.
