Forest Service: Please stay off icy Idaho roads

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) The U.S. Forest Service is asking northern Idaho residents to stay off icy forest roads whenever possible because there have been multiple slide-offs and accidents in the region.

Forest Service spokesman Jason Kirchner says that even the emergency vehicles and tow trucks responding to the crashes are sliding off the road in some cases.

The weather around Coeur d'Alene has been warm enough to melt snow on hillsides during the day, but the snow melt is re-freezing across forest roads at night. That's created a thick layer of ice on the forest roads.

The Forest Service says for now the public should stay off the frozen roads whenever possible, and carry tire chains and drive slowly when travel can't be avoided.
