Firefighter dies after back surgery: 'The loss is just so immense'

EAGLE, Idaho (KBOI) - Firefighter Brandon Erickson hurt his back picking up his kit on a medical call a while back.

His boss says last week he had surgery to fix his back and he didn't seem worried at all.

"He went in to surgery. It was successful. He went home that night, got up the next morning, everything was fine as far as any of us knew. (We) can't comprehend, said Eagle Fire Chief Mike Winkle."

The chief says Brandon Erickson passed away from complications from the surgery on Thursday. He says fellow firefighters had to make the call to Erickson's house to transport him to the hospital where he later died. The chief says that the news was hard on everyone at the station.

"I've tried all week to try and find words to describe it. The loss is just so immense," Winkle said.

The Eagle Fire Department says that Erickson started with the station in April as a paramedic instructor. He started his career as a firefighter/paramedic with the Meridian Fire Department. Erickson's office was covered in well wishes Monday and fire crews emblazoned their helmets with Brandon's initials to remember a fallen brother. PHOTO GALLERY of Erickson's funeral

Even as plans are being made, wherever Brandon Erickson goes, he's not alone. "We have people that have volunteered from both Meridian and Eagle Fire Department to stand watch. They take four hour shifts. [They] stand there 24/7, whatever the weather conditions are, full dress uniform, paying their respect to their lost brother," Winkle said.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at Eagle Christian Church, 100 S Short Road, Eagle ID followed by services at Meridian cemetery.
