Extended medians part of ACHD plan at Fairview and Cole

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Improvements are "long overdue" at Fairview Avenue and Cole Road, according to the Ada County Highway District, which has proposed changes including widening the intersection and extending medians.

Plans call for two left turn lanes and dedicated right turn lanes. People who live on a nearby street say some try to avoid the congestion.

"They come zipping down this road," said Kelly Rhoades of Boise. "It's a 20 mile an hour zone. They're doing 35 down this little road. There aren't very many little kids right now, but there are dogs, pets. They don't care. They just speed on by."

Medians would prevent left turns farther down the two streets in both directions, which ACHD says will improve safety. The agency says only two other intersections in Ada County have more crashes.

Debra Messenger of Boise said the medians would make the area safer but more frustrating.

"I see the safety part, too, but as a commuter, I think it's a pain in the backside," Rhoades said.

ACHD says 4,315 cars pass through the intersection during peak hours. Public comments are being accepted through Feb. 13, and construction is scheduled for 2017.
