Driver charged with vehicular manslaughter in death of teens

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - The driver of a car that crashed into a cement wall, killing two teens and injuring another, is now being charged with their deaths.

The Ada County Prosecutor's Office says that Cody Olson has been arrested and charged with two counts of felony vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of Scott Hyde and Kelsey Belcher, one count of felony injury to a child for injuring Jasmine Ondrick, and one count of misdemeanor driving without privileges.

Police say that Olson was driving a car with four other teens in March 2012 when he hit the wall near Curtis Road and the Connector at least 80 miles per hour.

Hyde was killed instantly. Belcher later died in the hospital.

Only one teen was wearing a seatbelt. That person suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A report issued later by the Idaho Transportation Department said that Olson was racing the brother of one of his passengers, and had alcohol in his system.

The prosecutor's office says each count of vehicular manslaughter has a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Felony injury to a child carries a maximum ten year prison sentence.
