Man who threatened hikers, killed dog in Boise Foothills identified by coroner

The Ada County Coroner has identified the man who died in an officer-involved shooting in the Boise Foothills over the weekend.

The coroner says 42-year-old Benjamin C. Barnes died from a gunshot wound to the chest. He suffered two gunshots in total, the coroner says: one fatal, one non-fatal.

On Saturday, police say Barnes was threatening to shoot hikers and dogs in the Hulls Gulch area. One dog was eventually shot dead by Barnes, officials say.

When the six officers confronted the man, authorities say he shot at them, that's when they opened fire and killed the man.

The coroner says it's been unable to locate family members of Barnes. Anyone with information about Barnes' family is asked to call 287-5556.
