BPD: Officers catch Exergy bike suspect breaking into business

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Police have arrested a 19-year-old teen who's suspected of stealing more than $100,000 worth of bicycles including professional bikes from last month's Exergy race.

Boise PD says it arrested Michael Anthony Lawrence at about 1 a.m. as he was trying to steal four bicycle tires from a South Cole Road business.

BPD says Lawrence had broken a window to the business to get inside. Officers found the tires in a nearby field.

Lawrence has been booked on 13 counts of felony grand theft. Police say he is also suspected of stealing 13 of the racing bikes valued at about $110,000. The bikes were recovered and returned to the owners the following day.

"...After a lot of investigating, surveillance of the suspect, subpoenas and search warrants, detectives have what we feel is a very solid case against this suspect for what's turning out to be a series of bike thefts and burglaries, "said Boise PD Sgt. Randy Buzzini. (Photos of the Exergy Bikes >>>)

"Our case on the bike thefts just came together this week," Buzzini said. "The fact that the suspect committed a burglary just sped up his arrest. "

Police say the wide-spread publicity of the Exergy bikes likely caused Lawrence to change his habits.

"It's possible publicity of the racing bike thefts caused him to change course, to slow down taking bikes and do more burglaries. This is still very much an ongoing investigation," he said.
