8-year-old Julia Bringhurst is teaming up with the Salvation Army to help those in Houston hit by Hurricane Harvey.

“My family lives down there and I saw it on the news and then I thought they needed help,” the third-grader said.

Thankfully, Julia's family in Houston are okay.

Still, she asked her parents to help her start a Salvation Army Red Donation Bucket at her school - Garfield Elementary.

“For people that can’t live in their houses and people that are in the gyms and all that,” Julia said.

Garfield has 450 students.

Julia hopes each student donates a dollar.

And then doubles it.

“I kind of want to raise like $900 maybe,” Julia said.

Her third grade teacher, Brooke Andrews, says she helped her students make signs and has been teaching them about being good citizens and helping others.

“They have taken this on as their own and they are really proud of it so I am proud of her,” Andrews said.

Donations aren’t just limited to students at Garfield. Anyone can donate to Julia’s bucket through next week. It's located in the front office.
