UPDATE: Winter storm warning posted for Boise mountains

Gusty winds and widespread showers are expected Wednesday afternoon through Thursday for the region. (KBOI Graphic)

A very moist and potent storm system has its sights set on southwest Idaho.

Gusty winds and widespread showers are expected Wednesday afternoon through Thursday for the region.

Heavy snow is expected for the higher elevations, primarily above 6,500 feet, where 5-10" of snow will fall. At the highest of locations, including some areas in the Sawtooths, up to 17 inches of snow could fall.

Travel will be difficult over higher terrain, especially along Idaho Highway 21 over Banner Summit, where about a foot of snow is forecasted.

The heaviest snowfall will occur in the Boise/West Central mountains. The winter storm warning goes into effect Wednesday evening.

In the Treasure Valley, don't get out your winter boots just yet. It will be too warm for any snow, so plan for periods of rain through Thursday night.
