59 cats rescued from Ore. apartment

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Fifty-nine cats were rescued Tuesday from a Newberg apartment, according to the Oregon Humane Society.

The 13 kittens and 46 cats were surrendered by the owner who had been overwhelmed with the work of feeding and caring for them, the humane society said in a news release.

The cats will be examined by a medical team and will receive care if needed.

No charges have been filed against the owner.

They aren't up for adoption yet, the humane society said. But there are plenty of other cats available.

"We have more than 70 cats at our shelter now and more arriving daily," OHS Executive Director Sharon Harmon said in the news release. "We'll need all the room we can get for the new rescued cats."
