18-year-old suspected of starting Karney wildfire waives hearing
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - An 18-year-old who officials say started a dangerous wildfire on purpose made his second court appearance Monday.
Nathanial Bartholomew waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday afternoon in a Boise County courtroom. Bartholomew, who said nothing inside the courtroom, has pleaded not guilty to felony arson.
Bartholomew, a volunteer firefighter in the Robie Creek area, allegedly started the Karney Fire on purpose to bring himself attention from family members. Officials say he was spotted fighting the Sept. 17 fire when responders arrived.
The Karney Fire burned about 440 acres and threatened about 100 homes at its worse. The fire destroyed one home.
Barthologmew's next court date will be Oct. 11. His father was in court, however, he declined to comment with a KBOI 2News reporter.
