A 16-year-old boy is behind bars on charges of careless handling of a firearm after shooting a 15-year-old girl in the leg earlier this month.

Deputies say the girl didn't call 911 when the incident happened, and deputies only found out what happened after getting a report from a third party that the girl was being treated for a bullet wound in the emergency room.

Deputies are recommending a misdemeanor charge of providing false information to law enforcement, because she originally told them she was shot in the leg by people driving by while she was walking in the early morning of July 3.

The girl told deputies she was walking on Ustick between Ten Mile and Black Cat roads just before midnight.

Deputies did not find any evidence of a shooting in the area, and determined the shooting occurred in the girl's home.

The boy who shot her was charged with a misdemeanor of being a minor in posession of a firearm. He turned himself in Thursday morning.
