Out of this world event coming to Boise!

An event called STEM Moon Shot is on its way to Boise! (Abigail Taylor, KBOI).

Legos, moon rockets, and prizes --- need we say more?

An event called STEM Moon Shot is on its way to Boise!

It's part of BSU's Engineering and Science Festival on Feb. 3.

Scott Bowman, a self proclaimed 'recovering engineer,' is orchestrating STEM Moon Shot, with help from the Idaho STEM Action Center, Micron, Idaho LUG, and IDEABrickWorks.

Here's some of what's on the launch pad for this event:

Building an 11.5 foot tall model of the 1969 Saturn V Moon Rocket out of LEGO brick!

  • Scott Bowman is looking for hundreds of kids to help him make history by building a Saturn V Moon Rocket model completely out of LEGO brick.
  • Primarily geared toward children between the ages of 7 and 14, however there are some exceptions to that.
  • Kids will be broken up into several groups who will add layers of LEGO to the rocket until its complete.
  • Each group will build for half-hour.
  • It will take 373 layers of more than 30,000 bricks to complete this rocket!
  • Building will begin at 9 a.m. and needs to be completely finished by 4 p.m.

LEGO free build

  • There will be literally THOUSANDS of LEGOS that kids can use to build anything they can think of!
  • This is for ALL ages.

Design within Constraints Competition.

  • Some strict guidelines will make this one a bit more challenging, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun and build something really cool!
  • The competition will be broken up into several different age groups, so everyone will have a chance to show off their talent!

Build your own small version of the Saturn V Moon Rocket out of LEGO

  • 1700 kids will get to build and take home their very own Saturn V Moon Rocket to remember the day by!

"This [event] is showing them, not just talking to them," said Scott Bowman. "They are going to see that it takes a team and it can't just be one group building the whole thing. It will be eight groups over the whole day!"

This is a free event, but registration is required.
