Man who had sex with 15-year-old girl at hotels gets 25 years

CALDWELL, Idaho (KBOI) -- A 34-year-old Nampa man will spend up to 25 years in prison for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

The Canyon County Prosecutor's office says Joseph Howard Brown was arrested in March of this year after an investigation by the Nampa Police Department revealed he was having an ongoing sexual relationship with the teen.

Officials say Brown was a close friend to the victim's stepfather.

"He used his trusting relationship with her parents to groom the victim for over a year, buying her expensive gifts and even an engagement ring," a news release stated.

Brown admitted to having sex with the victim on numerous occasions at various hotels in the Treasure Valley. He also admitted to detectives that he loved the underage victim and planned to marry her when she turned 18. Prosecutors say Brown videotaped the victim engaging in sexual acts with him.

"This is a classic example of the grooming tendencies you see in these types of cases involving an underage victim," said Bryan Taylor, prosecutor. "Mr. Brown knew his actions were wrong, yet he continued them for close to a year. He deserves to be behind bars for a long time."

Brown will have to serve five years behind bars before he's eligible for parole. He will also have to register as a sex offender, pay the teen $5,000 and have no contact with the victim or her family for 25 years.
